Games and Refugees is a research talk on how migration experiences intersect with games in both digital and non-digital forms. Free entry. There will be four researchers who will explain how these two concepts interact:
Dr. Sonja Gabriel works as a professor for media didactics and media education at the KPH Vienna/Lower Austria, where she is active in the education and training of teachers. Her work explores how Serious games on migration function as interactive narratives that convey political messages and ideological perspectives. This contribution examines how game mechanics, rewards, punishments, and design choices shape socio-cultural and ethical understandings of migration. By analyzing inclusions, omissions, and representations, the discussion highlights how these elements influence player perceptions.
Dr. Víctor Navarro-Remesal is a Game Scholar working at Tecnocampus – UPF, Spain. Victor does research in videogames and freedom, videogame preservation, and Japanese games.
Dr. Beatriz Perez Zapata holds a PhD in English Studies from the University of Zaragoza. Together they will present about Ludonarrative Strategies for Playing the Stories of Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
Dr. Alina Potemska holds a Ph.D. degree from The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw Poland. She will discuss the design and artistic intent behind her dissertation work ”Exodus”, a board game based on the biblical exodus and migration to the promised land.
