Always on the move – Postal vehicles
Postal transport methods have always changed and developed in line with advances in transportation technology. The exhibition at the Postal Museum's Kupla, focuses in particular on postal motor vehicle transport.
In the early days of postal services in the 1600s and 1700s, transport was based on horseback and water routes and cart trails. Railways sped up the flow of mail, goods, and people in the developing society at the end of the 1800s. In the decades before the wars, mail was sent by air and on rubber wheels for the first time. But it wasn’t until after the wars that air and car transport became common.
Today, shipments are transported between sorting centers in Finland by truck and delivered to mailboxes and mail slots by delivery trucks or light vehicles such as cargo scooters, bicycles, or delivery carts. More and more vehicles are environmentally friendly, running on electricity, biogas, and hydrogen. Posti’s goal is to achieve fossil-free transport by 2030.
